Description
Introduction
Kotli is a village located in Udhampur District, Jammu & Kashmir, with an approximate population of 6,000 people. The village is surrounded by beautiful hills, lush greenery, and a peaceful natural environment, making it an attractive and pleasant place to live. Agriculture, animal husbandry, and small businesses are the primary sources of livelihood for the villagers.
People and Community
The people of Kotli are known for their unity, kindness, hospitality, and helpful nature. During our village visit, we found everyone to be friendly and cooperative. Whenever we asked questions about the village, the residents patiently shared information with us. Many villagers warmly welcomed us and even offered us drinking water and tea, reflecting their respect for guests and generous nature. This friendly atmosphere made our survey and interaction with the villagers smooth, comfortable, and memorable.
Role of the Sarpanch and Panchayat
The Sarpanch and Panchayat members are active, responsible, and dedicated to the welfare of the village. During our interaction, we witnessed an incident where an elderly woman, around 70 years old, approached the Sarpanch for help. The Sarpanch immediately paused our interview, listened carefully to her concerns, and helped her before continuing the discussion with us. This demonstrated the caring attitude, responsibility, and commitment of the Panchayat towards the welfare of the villagers.
Religious and Cultural Heritage
Kotli has a rich religious and cultural heritage. One of the most important religious sites in the village is the ancient Barshani Mata Mandir. The village also has several other places of worship, including Mahadev Mandir, Hanuman Mandir, Radha Krishna Mandir, and Kali Mata Mandir, along with a mosque and small Gurudwaras.
People from different faiths live together peacefully and celebrate religious and cultural festivals with great enthusiasm. This reflects the village's communal harmony, mutual respect, and strong community spirit.
Natural Resources and Infrastructure
The village is blessed with several natural water sources, including traditional baolis (natural springs), wells, and hand pumps, which provide water for the daily needs of the residents.
Kotli has essential infrastructure such as government schools, electricity, drinking water supply, and good road connectivity. During our visit, we observed that the village roads were well maintained and free from major potholes, making travel safe and convenient.
Local transportation is easily available through Metadors and e-rickshaws, which connect the village with nearby towns and markets. Mobile network and internet services are also available, enabling villagers to access various digital services.
Challenges Faced by the Village
Despite its many strengths, Kotli faces several important challenges.
-
There is no proper hospital within the village, forcing residents to travel to nearby towns for medical treatment, especially during emergencies.
-
The village also lacks proper sports facilities and playgrounds, limiting opportunities for children and youth to participate in sports and physical activities.
Development Potential
With improvements in healthcare facilities, sports infrastructure, and employment opportunities, Kotli has excellent potential for future development. Strengthening these sectors would significantly improve the quality of life for the villagers while preserving the village's unique cultural and natural heritage.
Conclusion
Overall, Kotli is a peaceful, naturally beautiful, and culturally rich village with a strong sense of unity and community spirit. The friendly behaviour of its people, the dedication of the Panchayat, the presence of ancient religious places, good road connectivity, natural water sources, and the warm hospitality of the villagers make Kotli a special place. With better healthcare services, sports facilities, and employment opportunities, the village has a bright and promising future.
