Description
Introduction to Paroh Village
Paroh is a peaceful rural village located in Katra Tehsil of Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir. Surrounded by agricultural fields and gentle hills, the village offers a serene environment while maintaining close connectivity with the town of Katra. According to information collected during our field visit in June 2026, Paroh has an approximate population of 787 residents. The village reflects the simplicity of rural life and preserves the rich cultural traditions of the Dogra region.
Population and Community
Paroh is home to nearly 787 residents, living in a close-knit community where mutual cooperation and social harmony are highly valued. Most families have lived in the village for generations and actively participate in community activities, religious events and local development initiatives. Agriculture remains one of the primary occupations, while several residents are employed in nearby Katra and surrounding areas.
Cultural Heritage and Traditions
The cultural identity of Paroh is deeply influenced by the Dogra traditions of Jammu and Kashmir. Hindi and Dogri are the primary languages spoken by the residents. Festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Lohri, Baisakhi and Navratri are celebrated with great enthusiasm, bringing the community together. The villagers continue to preserve their customs, values and traditional way of life while embracing gradual social and economic development.
Education and Community Development
Education plays an important role in the village. Paroh has a Government Middle School, providing basic education to local children. For higher education, students usually travel to Katra and nearby towns. During our interaction with the villagers, it was evident that education is considered an important step towards improving future opportunities for the younger generation.
Healthcare Facilities
The village has a Government Dispensary that provides basic healthcare and primary medical treatment to the local population. The medical staff offer essential healthcare services and routine treatment, while patients requiring specialized medical attention are referred to hospitals in Katra and nearby cities.
Agriculture and Livelihood
Agriculture is the backbone of Paroh’s economy. Farmers mainly cultivate wheat, maize, paddy and seasonal vegetables, while dairy farming and livestock rearing provide additional sources of income. Due to the village’s proximity to Katra, several residents are also employed in tourism-related activities, private businesses and service sectors.
Infrastructure and Connectivity
Paroh is connected to Katra through a motorable road, making transportation convenient for residents and visitors. The village has access to electricity, drinking water and basic public services. However, during our field visit, it was observed that several internal roads require repair and better maintenance, highlighting the need for further infrastructure development.
Potential for Future Development
With its strategic location near Katra, Paroh has significant potential for future growth. Improvements in road infrastructure, public facilities, skill development, healthcare and employment opportunities can further enhance the quality of life of its residents. The village possesses the resources and community spirit required for sustainable rural development while preserving its cultural heritage and natural surroundings.
