INTRODUCTION :

Marh village, located in the Jammu district of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is a beautiful and peaceful place that is famous for its rich green fields and a way of life that reflects traditional rural values and practices. The fertile lands of Marh yield bountiful harvests of wheat, rice, and corn sustaining a community deeply connected to the soil. Marh is also noted for its warm and welcoming community, where local customs and traditions are deeply rooted in the daily lives of its inhabitants. The community is known for its warmth and hospitality, with customs and traditions deeply embedded in everyday life.Despite its rural setting, Marh village is gradually embracing modern facilities , balancing tradition with progress.

 

AGRICULTRE :

It is a quaint village , known for its scenic beauty and fertile agricultural lands, it is a hub of traditional farming practices and a community deeply connected to its cultural roots. The fertile soil and favorable climatic conditions make it suitable for cultivating a variety of crops. The villagers predominantly grow staples such as rice, wheat, and maize, along with corn and vegetables. Traditional farming methods are commonly employed, although modern techniques and irrigation systems are gradually being adopted to enhance productivity. The agricultural practices in Marh are deeply intertwined with the cultural and social fabric of the community, reflecting a rich heritage and a strong connection to the land.

 

LIFESTYLE :

It is characterised by a traditional, agriculture-based lifestyle. Most residents are engaged in farming, cultivating crops like wheat, rice , corn , etc . which dictate the rhythm of life, with sowing, harvesting, and other farming activities shaping the daily routine. Villagers often gather for communal activities, religious festivals, and cultural events. The Panchayat system is central to local governance, where decisions are made collectively, reflecting the village's strong sense of unity and mutual support.The diet in Marh is largely based on locally grown produce. Staples include wheat-based bread (roti), rice, corn, and vegetables. Dairy products, such as milk, curd, and ghee, are commonly consumed, as many households rear livestock. Traditional dishes are often prepared during festivals and family gatherings. Men typically wear kurta-pajamas, while women often dress in saris or salwar kameez. On special occasions and festivals, villagers wear more elaborate traditional outfits.

 

CULTURE AND RITUALS :

This area is predominantly inhabited by Dogras, an ethnic group known for their distinct customs and practices. One of the most notable rituals is the celebration of Lohri, a festival marking the end of winter and the arrival of longer days. Another significant cultural event is Baisakhi, celebrated with great enthusiasm to mark the harvest season. People dress in colourful attire, perform traditional Bhangra and Gidda dances, and visit local gurdwaras and temples to offer prayers. Additionally, The Dogra cuisine, featuring dishes like Ambal of pumpkin and mango (it is sweet and sour dish ,Rajma-Chawal (kidney beans with rice) and Kaladi (a type of local cheese). Traditional attire like the Dogri suit for women and the kurta-pajama for men, often adorned during festivals and special occasions. These customs and rituals not only foster a strong sense of community but also preserve the rich cultural heritage of the region for future generations.

 

HEALTH AND EDUCATION :

In this area, healthcare is primarily provided by Govt. Hospital SDH, Marh offering various services. This hospital meets primary healthcare needs with treatments, maternal care,ultrasound, x-rays ,blood test and immunizations. Villagers receive immediate care from dispensaries. The Indian Army conducts free medical camps. For complex issues, villagers travel to nearby towns or Jammu for specialized medical care. Educational system in this area is a mix of public and private institutions, working together to provide comprehensive education to the village's youth. the Govt Primary School, Marh, which provides affordable education from the primary level through secondary, playing a vital role in enhancing literacy and foundational skills in the rural community. Various scholarships are available for students from economically weaker sections and marginalized communities.

 

ROLE OF SARPANCH :

ELECTION PROCESS : Sarpanch is elected through a democratic process. The election is marked by active participation from the villagers, as he is responsible for implementing policies that directly affect their daily lives. Residents of Marh aged 18 and above, registered as voters in the village, hold the eligibility to participate in the voting process.

 

INTRODUCTION OF SARPANCH :

Mr. Narendra Singh is the dedicated Sarpanch known for his strong leadership and commitment to the community and villagers for 24 years . He had been doing various development initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and agriculture in Marh. He is working tirelessly to enhance the quality of life for all vilagers.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: The Sarpanch, or head of the Gram Panchayat, plays a crucial role in village governance in India. They implement government schemes, oversee public infrastructure, resolve local disputes, and ensure law and order. The Sarpanch also presides over Panchayat meetings, promoting democratic decision-making and representing villagers' voices.

 

Exploring The Historical Legacy :

There are total 30 bunker in this area which were built after Indo-Pak war in 1965. The Famous Shri Ragunath Ji Temple which was constructed in the late 18th century during the rule of Maharaja Gulab Singh and the painting on the walls of the temple preserves the history of temple, village’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage through detailed, enduring artwork. There is a tree outside the temple where the coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh was performed. The temple was renovated by Colonel Pavinder Singh, Commanding Officer of 15 Jack Rifles, Army Medal.

 

ECONOMICAL DEVELOPMENT :

Education and skill development are prioritized, with upgraded schools and vocational training centers empowering residents. Health and wellness initiatives ensure the community thrives in both economic and quality-of-life aspects. Together, poultry farming and Chakki Aata milling represent the blend of tradition and modern entrepreneurship that drives the economic development, fostering growth .

 

While preserving its cultural roots. Chakki Aata, or traditionally milled flour, remains a cornerstone of Marh’s agricultural economy. Many families in the village operate small chakki mills, where they grind wheat and other grains harvested from their fields. This not only meets the local demand for fresh, unprocessed flour but also caters to nearby markets.
