Description

Description About The Village:

Mandal is a beautiful village located in Jammu tehsil of Jammu district, about 12 km from Jammu city. It is known for its peaceful rural lifestyle, strong community bonds, and traditional heritage. The village has an approximate population of 1,050 people living in nearly 200 households, with agriculture being the main occupation. Mandal is rich in cultural identity, reflected in its old temples where villagers gather for worship and festivals, its hand pumps that still provide water in many homes, and its old mud-brick houses that remind us of earlier times. Large stretches of farmland and the use of bulls for ploughing highlight the continuing importance of farming in daily life. The main attraction of the village is its spiritual atmosphere and age-old temples, which serve as both cultural and social centers. Mandal also functions as a Gram Panchayat and falls under the Marh Vidhan Sabha and Jammu Lok Sabha constituencies. It is connected to Jammu city, which lies about 15 km away, providing access to education, trade, and healthcare. Altogether, Mandal represents a blend of tradition, simplicity, and slow development, making it a unique part of the Jammu region.

Cultural & Spiritual Heritage of Mandal:

Mandal village, located in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir, carries a deep sense of cultural and spiritual heritage. The village is home to several ancient temples, the most prominent being a 300-year-old temple dedicated to Lord Nursingh Bhagwan. Remarkably, there are only two such daggis (sacred shrines) of Nursingh Bhagwan in Jammu & Kashmir—one in Mandal and the other in Ghagwal—making this temple a rare and spiritually significant landmark.

The village also features many traditional old houses, some over a century old, built with locally sourced materials, showcasing the unique Dogra architectural style. These heritage homes reflect the ancestral way of life and stand as living symbols of the village’s historical roots.

Cultural traditions are kept alive through festivals, folk music, oral storytelling, and temple rituals, all of which form an essential part of community life. Mandal's cultural identity is thus shaped by both its sacred landmarks and its people’s commitment to preserving their heritage.

Governance & Connectivity:

Mandal is governed through the Panchayati Raj system, with an elected Sarpanch representing the voice of the people and looking after local development and community needs. The Gram Panchayat plays a vital role in managing day-to-day issues, implementing government schemes, and ensuring basic civic services in the village. Politically, Mandal falls under the Marh Vidhan Sabha constituency at the state level and the Jammu Lok Sabha constituency at the national level, which connects the village to larger democratic processes.

In terms of connectivity, Mandal enjoys close proximity to Jammu city, located about 15 km away. Jammu serves as the main hub for education, trade, healthcare, and employment opportunities, ensuring that villagers remain linked to urban facilities while continuing their traditional rural lifestyle. The roads and transport links between Mandal and Jammu make it easier for residents to commute, access markets, and avail essential services, keeping the village both rooted in tradition and open to modern growth.

Population & Households:

Mandal has an approximate population of around 1,050 people living in nearly 200 households. The village is home to men, women, and children of all age groups, with a young generation actively going to schools. The community includes different social groups and families engaged mainly in agriculture and allied activities.

Local Facilities & Services:

Within the village, the Panchayat oversees facilities like handpumps, a primary school, and small local shops that cater to daily needs. The Panchayat also helps villagers access government welfare schemes such as rural employment, housing support, and agriculture subsidies, improving the overall quality of life.

Resources & Livelihood:

The main resource and livelihood of Mandal village is agriculture, with most families engaged in farming seasonal crops, vegetables, and grains. Alongside farming, animal husbandry plays an important role, as cows, buffaloes, goats, and bulls provide milk, manure, and support for cultivation. Water for irrigation and household needs largely comes from wells, hand pumps, and groundwater, while seasonal rains also help in replenishing fields. Many villagers also work as daily wage labourers or take up small jobs in nearby Jammu city to supplement their income. In addition, government schemes and rural employment programs provide support to families, helping them sustain their livelihood and improve their standard of living.
