Description
Maira is a village located near Jourian in Akhnoor Tehsil, Jammu district, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It falls under the Muthi Maira Gram Panchayat, a joint panchayat comprising the villages of Maira and Muthi. The village is served by the 181202 PIN code.
According to local tradition, the name Maira refers to elevated land situated away from a water source, reflecting the village's original geographical setting. The village is believed to have been established approximately 400–500 years ago by two related men who settled in the area with their families. Over time, additional families joined the settlement, leading to the gradual development of the village.
Agriculture has traditionally been the primary occupation of the residents and continues to play an important role in the local economy.
The Chenab River flows alongside the village and has been central to the lives and livelihoods of its residents. While the river provides significant benefits, it has also caused severe bank erosion over the years, resulting in the loss of agricultural land. According to local residents, the absence of adequate riverbank protection measures has contributed to continued erosion.
