In the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Kud is a town and a notified area committee located in the Udhampur district. Approximately 10 kilometers away from the well-known tourist destination Patnitop, it is well-known for a regional treat called "Desi Ghee Patisa," which is another term for the milk-based confection.

 

Population and Urbanisation

There are 1,140 people living in  kud, an area renowned for its natural beauty and rich cultural legacy. With 54% of people being men and 46% being women, the population distribution shows a somewhat higher proportion of men than women. 59% of the population in the area is literate, indicating continued attempts to raise educational opportunities and literacy rates. Notwithstanding obstacles, kud keeps improving its educational system in an effort to close the literacy gap and create a community that is better informed and more capable.

 

Cultural Heritage

According to villagers, the "Kud Dance"—a cultural dance performed by the local Pahari people as a way of thanking the gods for their protection and blessings—may have inspired the name Kud. The town subsequently chose the same name because this dance form has been popular in the surrounding areas for generations, making it intimately associated with the locals' cultural and religious customs.

 

Historical Account: The Legend of Sage

This quaint town in Jammu & Kashmir is made more mysterious by the folklore around Kud. According to local legend, an old sage once traversed the hills close to Kud and chose to meditate there after becoming fascinated by the peace and beauty of the surroundings. In search of heavenly enlightenment and benefits for the region, he reportedly spent years in deep meditation at a sacred location in the Himalayas.

Kud and the other villages are said to have benefited from the sage's blessing, which included protection and prosperity. According to the locals, Kud's natural beauty and protection are due to his blessings. They claim that his presence may still be felt in the tranquility of the woods and the cool mountain air that envelops the community.

 

Tourist Attraction

In a more sedate and private location, the Kud Tulip Garden offers a comparable enchanted experience. The garden, which is surrounded by colorful tulips and offers sweeping views of the neighboring valleys and wooded slopes, is located amid the tranquil and verdant hills of Jammu. The best time to visit is in the spring (March to April), when the Kud Tulip Garden is in full bloom, bringing a festive appeal and a riot of color to the neighborhood. The gardens, verdant landscapes, and valleys come alive with flowers and new greens during this time, which also signifies the beginning of the tourist season.

Additionally, when the crop starts to take shape in July and August, the Kud dance is a component of the monsoon festivals. It is typically done at gatherings where the community gathers in traditional dress to rejoice, accompanied by drums, flutes, and other regional instruments, however it is not limited to any particular day.

The Great Tit (Parus major) is a type of bird that is frequently seen in Kud's forests and natural settings, it is the fauna of the village,found particularly in the mountainous and forested areas of the Jammu region. The Great Tit is a well-liked bird among nature lovers and birdwatchers due to its unique look and energetic disposition.

Known locally as the "Anjeer", the fig is the flora of the region's agricultural identity due to its dominance in the local economy and cuisine.
