Introduction to Kothi Village
Kothi is a small and pretty village nestled in the outskirts of the Udhampur district in the Union Teritory of Jammu and Kashmir. The village, being very unknown from the mainstream, is a tapestry of traditional culture, simple living, and scenic beauty, capturing the essence of true rural life.
Population and Earlier Settlememt
The village Kothi consists of approximately 350-400 people according to local survey. Earlier, people were setteled in a small community by making mud houses with sloping roof designed to withstand the monsoon rain as the weather of the whole Udhampur district is mainly cool with occasional rain. These mud houses were the inspiration for the initial settelers to name the village Kothi. Later, in the late 1990's, when Udhampur was declared as the Indian military's Northern Command, Kothi was established as an Indian Army camp as a commissary facility for the military personnel. Since then Kothi has evolved and advancements in urbanization has been made along with vast road-network and infractructure.
Community Life, Culture and Tradition
The village's culture is of a Hindu-Dogra lineage making the people of kothi known for their warmth and hospitality. Agriculture is the main occupation of majority of the village. The people of Kothi are very fond of their Dogra tradition and Hindu values. At the heart of the village, there is a big temple dedicated to Devi Durga, where all the people from every household comes and the festivals and rituals are held with fervor and joy. During the festival of Makar Sankrant, the locals arrange an annual Kushti competition around the temple by creating a mud ring and the local wrestlers then fight to win awards. Communnity services such as Langars are arranged by the locals occasionally. During Navratri festival, the temple is well lit for the 9 nights and the local gathers around to pray.
Landscape and Natural Attractions
Kothi's beauty and attraction is it's natural landcapes, the lush green plains and the hills covered with tall, green trees that makes a perfect view for sunrise early in the morning. The mornings are very calm with little hints of chill breeze. There is a very big Aam ka Bageecha which is a mango farm making the area covered with dense trees. The village also consists of a very wide variety of flora and fauna which adds an breathtaking view to it's natural attraction.

The best time to visit Kothi is mainly the monsoon and the autumn seasons where the above mentioned attractions can be whole heartedly m. Also, the the festive seasons like Navratri and Diwali are a hard to miss experience in Kothi where we see the true joy of celebrating the festivals.
Local Cuisines
The local cuisines consist of various Dogra cultured dishes. Some of the Dishes are, Malpura which is a local speciality which is made on special occasions. It is made by mixing flour, semolina, sugar and deep frying it till perfect golden-brown and eaten hot and crispy. Khameera is also a local speciality which is a type of flatbread mainly consumed during lunchtime. It is made by frying rolled dough mixed with spices and eaten with a chickpea or pumpkin curry and curd.
Occupation and Innovation
Occupations of Kothi's residents is mainly in agriculture, local business, and a very few people takes up military service. The community also includes small-scale farmers of dairy and exotic vegetable which they grow and sells in the market as they command higher prices.
Educational Facilities
Educational infrastructure in Kothi consists of Government Primary Schools and Anganwadi care centers. There is also a Computer center for studies. For children, the anganwadi centers provides early school education and nourish and foster the child by providing mid-day meals and free health checkups.
Roads and Connectivity
The village is easily accessible via the Jammu-Udhampur Highway which is a four-lane road connecting Jammu and Udhampur which is a part of the National Highway 44, allowing visitors to travel by car or by bus. Auto-rickshaws are available for inter-village connectivity.
Health and Veterinary Facilities
Kothi provides its residents with essential health facilities through various care centres, medical stores and clinics. It also provides a veterinary centre for medical emergencies of animals and birds in the village.
