Situated in the Bishnah Tehsil of Jammu district in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Kanhal is divided into two distinct sections—Kanhal Upper and Kanhal Lower—which together form the village community and contribute to its social, cultural, and administrative identity.

The village covers a geographical area of approximately 115.3 hectares and is characterized by fertile plains that support agriculture as the primary occupation of its residents.
