Introduction to Gurha Slathia

Gurha Slathia, a village and notified area in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, represents a notable cultural and historical site within the Indian Union Territory. Known for producing some of Jammu and Kashmir’s bravest individuals, Gurha Slathia carries a reputation for valor and tradition, with a remarkable military legacy and a close-knit community spirit. This village is distinguished by its iconic Amma ka Mandir, where Rajput families gather annually to honor their heritage.

Population and Urbanization

Gurha Slathia stands out as the only village in Jammu and Kashmir with a population exceeding 4,600 residents, as recorded in the 2011 census. Cultural Heritage of the Slathia Community

The Slathias belong to the Suryavanshi Rajput lineage within the Dogra region, particularly prevalent in Jammu, Samba, and Udhampur. As members of the esteemed Jamwal clan, this community originated as sub-clans formed by brothers of the reigning Maharajahs, later receiving Jagirs in various regions. Historical Account: The Legend of Raja Beeram Dev

Local lore recounts the story of Raja Beeram Dev, a prince admired by the Delhi Sultanate’s ruler. Upon refusing to convert to Islam to marry the Badshah's daughter, Beeram Dev became a target of the Sultan’s ire. Wazir Hasil Dev, loyal to the prince, facilitated his escape, though both Beeram Dev and Hasil Dev later met tragic fates. Hasil Dev’s descendants, Data Ram and Owali, established lineages in Mangla and Gurha, respectively. The Gurha branch, henceforth known as the Slathia Rajputs, later received Jagirs in Dada Seeba and further cemented their status in the region.
