Description
Sanyal (also spelled Saniyal) is a small village in the Hiranagar Tehsil of Kathua district, Jammu & Kashmir, located about 4 km from Hiranagar town and falling under the Jandi Gram Panchayat. Covering roughly 75 hectares, it has a PIN code of 184142 and is characterized by a mix of cultivated land—partly irrigated by canals and partly rain-fed—and some non-agricultural and waste land. Historically, while the village itself has little recorded documentation, its proximity to Hiranagar links it to the Dogra heritage and the 19th-century Hiranagar Fort built by Raja Hira Singh, reflecting the area’s cultural roots. According to the 2011 Census, Sanyal had a population of 686, with a high literacy rate of 85.44%, significantly above district and national averages, and a workforce primarily engaged in cultivation, household industries, and other labor, though agricultural laborers as a category were absent. The village has a government primary school, a girls’ primary school, and private institutions like Amar Jyoti Academy, while higher education and vocational training facilities are available nearby in Hiranagar. Healthcare is served by a primary health sub-centre within the village, supplemented by community health centres, maternity services, and hospitals in the surrounding area. The social composition includes a significant Scheduled Caste community (about 20%), with cultural life influenced by Dogra traditions, Hindu religious practices, and local Rajput heritage such as the Jasrotia clan. Agriculture remains the mainstay, supported by fertile soil and partial irrigation, while the village’s small size and close-knit community maintain a traditional rural character within a historically rich region.
