Introduction to Pallan

Pallan is a Village located far from the noise of the city in Billawar Block in Kathua District of Jammu & Kashmir State, India. It is located 29 KM towards North from District HEADQUARTERS Kathua and 6 KM from Billawar Rural. It is famous for the Mata Bala Sundari mandir which is located at the top of the mountain, where we can reach by trek of 4KM. The most famous Shiva Shrine dates back to antiquity. Formerly known as the Hari-Hara Temple, it has Shiv Trimurti. Located in the Heart of Billawar Town, the temple is called Mahabilvaveshwar in view of abundance of Bilva trees in the area. It is believed that God Shiva is highly pleased when Bilva leaves, known as Bil-patri in local parlance, are offered to him. The temple spire is about 60 Ft high over a square sanctum.

Population and Urbanization

According to the census data, the total population of the area is 1,651, residing in 337 households. Females constitute 49% of the population, totaling 809 individuals. The overall literacy rate is 67.5%, with 1,115 literate individuals, but female literacy remains significantly lower at 28.6% (472). Scheduled Tribes make up 2.4% (40) of the population, while Scheduled Castes account for 14.4% (237). The working population comprises 27.6% of the total, indicating a modest employment level. In 2011, the child population (aged 0-6) was 230, with girls making up 47% (108) of this group. These statistics highlight demographic diversity and suggest areas for improvement, particularly in female literacy and employment opportunities.

Education

The village provides a range of educational facilities catering to different levels of learning. Within the village, there are private pre-primary schools, government primary schools, private primary schools, government middle schools, and a government secondary school, ensuring access to basic education for the local population. For higher education, students can travel to Billawar, where the nearest government arts and science degree college and ITA college are located. However, for specialized education and professional courses, such as engineering, medicine, management (MBA), and polytechnic studies, students need to go to Jammu, which also has a government school for disabled students. This highlights the village's access to foundational education locally, while advanced and specialized education opportunities are available in nearby towns and cities.

How to reach Pallan:

The village offers basic transportation facilities, with both public and private bus services available to the residents, ensuring connectivity to nearby areas. However, the village lacks a railway station, and there are no national or state highways within a 10-kilometer radius, which limits access to major transportation networks. A district road runs through the village, serving as the primary route for movement in and out of the area. Within the village itself, transportation is supplemented by traditional means such as man-pulled cycle rickshaws and animal-driven carts, which are commonly used for short distances and carrying goods. The road infrastructure includes pacca roads for permanent connectivity and kaccha roads for rural paths, ensuring basic mobility within the village despite the absence of advanced transportation links.

Communication Channel

The village has basic communication facilities, ensuring residents have access to landline connections and mobile network coverage for their daily communication needs. These services play a crucial role in connecting the village to the outside world. However, the absence of advanced communication infrastructure highlights a significant gap. There is no private courier facility in the vicinity further restricts the ease of sending and receiving parcels or important documents. This combination of limited modern communication facilities poses challenges for residents, especially for those needing reliable courier services.

Health and Veterinary Services

Pallan provides essential medical services through its Government Primary Healthcare Centre, offering basic Healthcare to residents. Additionally, the veterinary hospital addresses the needs of the village's animal population, ensuring holistic well-being across the community.

Entertainment and Cultural Venues 

A central venue for entertainment, The Ram Leela stage hosts dramatic renditions of the Ramayana, particularly during Dussehra. These performances, involving local actors and musicians serves as a platform for cultural expression and storytelling, drawing community and visitor engagement.

The forest surrounding Pallan is home to various species including leopards, peacocks, monkeys, pigs, fishes and parrots alongside a rich array of plants, flowers and berries.
