Description
Nalthi is a picturesque and relatively small village situated in the Bhaderwah tehsil of the Doda district in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir. Per the 2011 census, the village consists of 231 households and has a population of 1,310 people, with 691 males and 619 females. Its geographic area is about 189.8 hectares (roughly 1.90 km²). Nalthi falls under the governance of a Gram Panchayat, with a Sarpanch as its village head.
Demographics & Education:
Nalthi’s literacy rate is notably higher than the Jammu & Kashmir average. According to the census, its literacy rate is 71.75%, with a marked difference between male literacy (about 86.12%) and female literacy (around 56.24%). Children aged 0–6 make up a significant part of the population (227 children, or ~17.3%). Among the population, Scheduled Castes (SC) constitute around 18.24% (239 people), and Scheduled Tribes (ST) represent about 3.82% (50 people).
Economy & Work:
Out of its total population, 604 individuals are engaged in work activities. Of these, 46.85% are main workers (employed or earning for more than six months), while 53.15% are involved in marginal work (less than six months). Only a small number work as cultivators (owners or co-owners) or as agricultural laborers. The main occupations appear to be a mix of agriculture, labor, and perhaps seasonal work.
Geography & Environment:
Nalthi lies amidst a lush, hilly terrain characteristic of the Bhaderwah region, surrounded by deodar forests and expansive grasslands. The area is known for its natural beauty: meadow-like landscapes, flowering plants, and mountain breezes make it a tranquil retreat. Because of its location and scenic surroundings, the village has become a base camp for trekkers. It is especially frequented by those trekking between Sarthal (Bani) and Bhaderwah, as the altitude nearby reaches up to roughly 10,500 feet, making Nalthi a strategic resting point.
Connectivity & Infrastructure:
Though it’s somewhat remote, Nalthi is becoming more accessible: the Bhadarwah–Bani–Basholi road has improved connectivity, making it a “strategic junction point” for travelers. The village postal code is 182222. Rail connectivity is distant — there is no railway station within 10 km. According to local data, the nearest town is Bhaderwah, just a few kilometers away.
Tourism & Significance:
Nalthi is valued both as a tourist spot and an adventure hub. Its green meadows, deodar forests, and views of snow-clad mountains attract nature lovers, while trekkers use it as a base for expeditions. The ambiance is calm and rejuvenating, making it an ideal picnic spot. It is increasingly being promoted in eco-tourism circuits.
Social Fabric:
The village governance follows India’s Panchayati Raj system — there is a Sarpanch and presumably a village council. The composition of castes (SC, ST) suggests a socially diverse community. Given the high proportion of marginal workers, livelihoods may be seasonal, possibly tied to agriculture, labor, or trekking/tourism.
