Historically, Mansoo remained isolated from modern facilities until the mid-1970s. Before 1975, the village did not have any road connectivity, and residents had to travel long distances on foot to Symbal Chowa for their daily needs. The construction of a road after 1975 marked the beginning of development. Electricity was introduced around the same time, which brought massive changes in lifestyle, from using kerosene lamps to electric bulbs. Access to clean drinking water was a major challenge earlier, as villagers depended on rivers and natural streams. With gradual improvements, hand pumps and later piped water were introduced. Over the decades, the village has preserved its traditions, especially wrestling competitions, festivals, and community feasts at shrines. These events form an important part of its oral history and cultural memory.

 Population

Mansoo has a small population of around 25 households, which makes it a close-knit community. Most families are involved in agriculture, and everyone knows each other personally. The population structure is typical of rural areas, with a higher proportion of elderly people and children compared to working-age youth. Many young villagers move to Reasi, Jammu, or even outside the state in search of better jobs and education. The literacy rate is gradually improving, especially among children who attend government schools under the mid-day meal scheme. However, opportunities for higher studies remain limited, which affects overall growth. Despite this, the small population ensures a strong sense of unity, cooperation, and social bonding among villagers.

Urbanization

Urbanization in Mansoo is still in its early stages. The village has road connectivity, electricity, and mobile networks, but modern urban amenities like hotels, restaurants, or large markets are absent. For most advanced services, villagers rely on Reasi town, which acts as the nearest urban center. The spread of television, smartphones, and the internet has exposed villagers to modern lifestyles and employment opportunities, but on the ground, Mansoo continues to follow a traditional rural model. Houses are mostly kaccha-pucca constructions with open courtyards, cattle sheds, and small kitchen gardens. Urbanization has brought some changes like improved transportation, better access to healthcare in nearby towns, and awareness of government schemes. However, Mansoo still retains the authentic charm of a rural settlement, where collective values dominate individualism.

Economy and Occupation

The economy of Mansoo is primarily agrarian, with most families depending on farming and cattle rearing for livelihood. The main crops grown are wheat, maize, pulses, and seasonal vegetables. Farming is largely rain-fed, and modern techniques like mechanized tractors are rarely used. Cattle rearing provides milk and dairy products, which are either consumed locally or sold in nearby markets. Some villagers run small shops to provide daily essentials like groceries and snacks. A few people also work as daily wage laborers in construction or other activities in Reasi. Younger generations are increasingly looking for jobs in government services or private companies outside the village. The lack of large industries and employment centers within Mansoo is a challenge, but the self-sustaining agricultural model still ensures food security and livelihood for most families.

Education

Education in Mansoo is supported by a Government Middle School and a Government High School, which provide basic education to children. The mid-day meal scheme has increased school attendance, as children receive nutritious food along with studies. For better quality education, many parents prefer sending their children to schools in Reasi town, which offers English-medium and private institutions. Adult literacy is still limited, especially among older generations, but younger people are increasingly becoming aware of the importance of education. The main challenge is the lack of higher educational institutions within the village, which forces students to migrate. Despite these challenges, education has brought positive social change, improving awareness of health, hygiene, and new opportunities.

Healthcare

Healthcare facilities in Mansoo are limited to a small government dispensary, where basic treatments and first aid are available. For serious medical conditions, childbirth, or surgeries, villagers must travel to Reasi town, which has hospitals and specialized doctors. Common illnesses like fever, cough, seasonal flu, and minor injuries are treated locally, but lack of advanced healthcare often creates difficulties during emergencies. Government health workers occasionally visit the village for vaccination drives and awareness programs. While healthcare has improved compared to earlier times, there is still a need for better medical infrastructure and regular doctors in the village.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Mansoo is during spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when the weather is pleasant, and the natural surroundings are green and vibrant. During these months, fields are full of crops, and the climate is neither too hot nor too cold, making it comfortable for visitors. Winters can be cold due to the hilly terrain, while summers are moderately warm. Tourists and visitors often prefer to come during local festivals, fairs, or wrestling competitions, as they get a chance to experience the cultural traditions of the village. This makes Mansoo not just a scenic but also a culturally enriching destination.

Culture and Traditions

Mansoo is deeply rooted in cultural practices and traditions. Festivals, weddings, and religious gatherings are celebrated collectively. A major highlight of the cultural life is the wrestling competitions (dangal), where participants from neighboring villages and towns come to compete. These events attract large crowds and serve as a major source of entertainment. At shrines, villagers organize bhandaras (community feasts) during special occasions, where food is distributed freely to all. Local delicacies like khameera (a special bread made from wheat) and desi burfi are prepared during harvest and festive times. Music and folk songs also play an important role in village functions. One of the notable personalities linked with the village’s cultural identity is the singer Mukhtair Mastana.

Connectivity and Transportation

Mansoo is connected to Reasi and nearby towns through road networks. Public transportation includes local buses, jeeps, and metadors (shared taxis) that run at regular intervals. The availability of mobile networks and internet connectivity has improved communication, making it easier for students and professionals to stay connected with the outside world. However, roads may face challenges during monsoon or harsh weather, affecting accessibility. Despite this, transportation facilities have greatly improved life in Mansoo compared to earlier decades when people had to depend only on walking.
