Laliyal is a serene and culturally rich village situated in the Jammu district of Jammu and Kashmir, with a population of about 1,400 people. Historically known as Laliyal Jagir, the village is surrounded by Nandwal and Chak Alam, with Laliyal positioned in the middle. In earlier times, there was no river nearby, but over the years, the landscape changed and influenced settlement patterns. Interestingly, there are actually two villages named Laliyal—one located in Marh across the river and the other at the current site. The residents primarily speak Dogri, and the staple food is fragrant basmati rice. Known for its warm hospitality, the village offers a unique blend of traditional values and modern adaptations, making it both historically significant and socially vibrant.

Historical Account

Laliyal’s roots go back to a time when agriculture was the central way of life. The name Laliyal Jagir hints at a landholding or estate-based history, possibly during the princely or feudal periods of Jammu’s past. Over the years, the settlement expanded and adapted to changing conditions. The split into two Laliyals—one in Marh and one in the current location—can be attributed to shifts in land ownership, agricultural opportunities, and migration patterns. Traditional governance systems and strong community bonds have been a constant throughout its history, with respected elders, especially from the Rajput community, shaping local decision-making for generations.

Population & Livelihood Patterns

The village’s population of approximately 1,400 people is engaged in a mix of farming and non-farming occupations. While only about 14% of the residents are directly involved in agriculture, cultivating wheat, maize, and paddy primarily for household consumption, the remaining 86% have moved into non-agricultural livelihoods. These include small businesses, government jobs, and skilled trades, reflecting a significant shift from the traditional image of a purely farming-based village. This economic diversification is a striking feature of modern Laliyal.

Governance & Social Structure

Laliyal is administered through a Gram Panchayat led by an elected Sarpanch. Although democratic processes exist, actual decision-making often reflects the influence of dominant caste leaders and village elders. The main caste groups are Rajputs and Jats, who hold considerable social and economic influence, while Scheduled Castes make up around 10% and Scheduled Tribes around 2–3% of the population. The society follows a patriarchal structure, with men typically managing external work and governance while women primarily handle household responsibilities. The joint family system is still prevalent, with elders acting as guiding figures for family and community matters.

The cultural fabric of Laliyal is deeply intertwined with Hindu traditions. Temples form the heart of daily life, and religious festivals are celebrated with devotion and grandeur. One prominent religious site in the village hosts annual events that attract visitors from far and wide, including Punjab, with crowds reaching nearly one lakh people. An Anganwadi Centre serves nutritional and early childhood needs. Although the Panchayat office for Laliyal and Nandwal is located in Khandwal, it remains an important administrative link. The village also has a sports stadium, though it is not yet fully developed.

These include PM Awaas Yojana for rural housing, Ayushman Bharat for healthcare, Swachh Bharat for sanitation, Jal Jeevan Mission for drinking water supply, and MGNREGA for rural employment.
