Kaleeth, a historic village panchayat nestled in the Jammu district of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, rests gracefully in the foothills of the Himalayas. Located around 40 km from Jammu city and approximately 18 km from Akhnoor, the village commands cultural, historical, and strategic significance. Overlooking the international border with Pakistan, Kaleeth has historically been a valued military vantage point. The settlement is home to ancient temples, mosques, and a church—showcasing centuries of religious harmony. Once recognized for its strategic importance, the Kaleeth Fort, awarded to Colonel Shiv Ram Singh by the ruler of the erstwhile princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, remains a proud reminder of its martial heritage. Today, Kaleeth blends its glorious past with the serene rhythms of rural life.

Population and Settlement Structure

As per the 2011 Census of India, Kaleeth is home to 524 residents, accommodated in 110 households. The male population stands at 271, while females number 253, reflecting a sex ratio of 933 females per 1,000 males. Children aged 0–6 years form an important demographic group, numbering 64. The population includes 53 members from Scheduled Castes and 24 from Scheduled Tribes. The literacy rate is an impressive 72.71%, with male literacy at 74.54% and female literacy at 70.75%. Agriculture continues to be the primary livelihood, supported by employment opportunities in government services and nearby urban centers.

Situated within the Chamb sector, Kaleeth enjoys a position of strategic prominence, with elevated locations offering a clear view of the India–Pakistan border. At an elevation of about 333 meters above sea level, Kaleeth lies near the Tavi River, benefiting from both agricultural irrigation and scenic beauty. The proposed Jammu–Poonch railway line, once operational, is expected to further boost connectivity and economic potential.
