Description
Gharani is a village situated in the Ranbir Singh Pura (R.S. Pura) tehsil of Jammu district in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is located approximately 18 kilometers south of Jammu city.
The village is part of the Gharana Panchayat in the Suchetgarh block, which comprises two villages: Gharana and Gharani.
R.S. Pura, the tehsil in which Gharani is located, was formerly known as Nawashehar during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. It was renamed R.S. Pura by Maharaja Ranbir Singh, under whose reign it was developed as the first planned town in the state, featuring streets, a pond, an elephant training center, and the Diwana Mandir temple.
The region is renowned for its high-quality Basmati rice, with agriculture being a primary occupation. The fertile lands, irrigated by the Ranbir Canal system sourced from the Chenab River, contribute to the unique aroma and quality of the Basmati rice produced here.
Gharani, like many villages in the R.S. Pura region, reflects the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the area. The village's history is intertwined with the broader historical developments of the R.S. Pura tehsil, including its transformation under Maharaja Ranbir Singh and its role in the agricultural economy of Jammu and Kashmir.
